- Betting on the 2024 Paris Olympics expects to double from $20 million in 2021 to $40 million at this year’s games.
- A rise in legal sports betting states throughout the country is the main contributor to increased American betting expectations.
- Data from Google Trends supports increased Olympics betting interest from states with recently regulated sports betting industries and states still hoping for betting regulation.
BOSTON – The 2024 Paris Olympics are taking over the summer betting slate, but just how much money are Americans betting on the Olympics? The continuing rise of legal sports betting across the country leads betting projections to double since the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
Americans bet roughly $20 million on the 2021 Olympics, but that number expects to increase to $40 million for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Since 2021, 16 new states with legal sports betting have arrived, making it possible for 67% of the adult population to bet on the Olympics compared to just 40% in 2021.
When also adding in how much money Americans bet on sports this year, it’s unsurprising the 2024 Olympics will set betting records. Although not every state has released their betting revenue totals for April, there’s already been roughly $3.66 billion wagered through March/April this year.
Google Trends Show Increased Olympic Betting Interest
Utilizing Google Trends, the search term “can you bet on Olympics” was amongst the top of searches surrounding Olympic sports betting. The top three states for this search term are Ohio, Massachusetts, and North Carolina, which are three states that didn’t have a regulated sports betting industry during the last Olympics.
Ohio and Massachusetts launched legal sports betting in January of 2023, while North Carolina’s sports betting launch was celebrated just months ago in March of 2024. These states were each responsible for at least $650 million in handle for the month of March, which explains why this year’s Olympic betting statistics are projected to be the highest ever.
While searching “Olympic odds”, the google trends search shows Minnesota sports betting interest on the 2024 Paris Olympics, along with New York, Nevada, and Hawaii. Hawaii is another interesting note as, like Minnesota, Hawaii doesn’t have any state-regulated sportsbooks.
Still, the data shows that the betting interest for the Olympics is there, even in states without a regulated industry. Luckily for Minnesota and Hawaii, they can legally bet on the 2024 Paris Olympics Games with internationally-licensed sportsbooks.
