Becky Hammon Still A Longshot For NBA Head Coaching Gig

LAS VEGAS – Becky Hammon has been long considered to be the woman who will become the first female head coach in the NBA.

Hammon became the first female acting head coach in the NBA during her time with the San Antonio Spurs when Greg Popovich got ejected from a game, but she was never given a full-time head coaching job. The odds on legal sports betting sites say it’s not coming any time soon either.

Hammon has ample coaching experience in the NBA as a Spurs assistant coach from 2014 to 2021. She has also just recently become a head coach, just not for the NBA. Hammon accepted the head coaching job for the Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA and reportedly became the highest-paid coach in the league.

It seems as if the main obstacle between becoming an NBA head coach is taking the job offer in the WNBA. The WNBA finals usually end in October so theoretically she could leave after one season and take an NBA job if offered, but that seems unlikely.

Those betting on the NBA should not expect Hammon to be introduced as an NBA head coach before the end of 2022 although it seems like it will happen at some point in the future.

However, Popovich is 72-years-old and whenever he decides to retire, Hammon may be on the shortlist of candidates as someone so familiar with the team.
