- College football season kicks off in Ireland when Northwestern and Nebraska start the season.
- 11 other games kick off that day, with the best bets being on Nebraska(-13), Florida Atlantic(-7.5), the over in both UConn at Utah State(60.5) and Nevada at New Mexico State(54.5), and the under in the Vanderbilt at Hawaii matchup(55).
DUBLIN – The college football season kicks off with Week 0 action on August 27 when Northwestern and Nebraska travel to Dublin, Ireland to start the season.
The game will mark the first of eleven games of college football’s opening weekend, with legal sports betting sites already offering odds on many of them.
Best College Football Bets For Week 0
With just over three weeks remaining until the games all kick off, college football betting sites are sure to alter their lines leading up to the events.
Northwestern at Nebraska (-13)
Kicking off in Dublin, Ireland, betting on Nebraska to cover the spread may be an excellent bet based on how poor Northwestern was on the road last season.
Northwestern is listed as the away team in this neutral site game, but went 0-5 ATS on the road last season. Listed as the home team despite playing in Ireland, Nebraska went 4-3 ATS at home last season.
The focus is betting against Northwestern though, as they not only struggled on the road last season but also as underdogs. Northwestern covered in two of their eight games last season when an underdog.
Nevada at New Mexico State (Over 54.5)
Combining the Nevada Wolfpack and New Mexico State Aggies 2021 seasons, 25 games took place. In those 25 games, only seven went under 54.5 points.
Nevada lost stars in quarterback Carson Strong and receiver Romeo Doubs, but there is a strong precedent on Nevada games going over. The over hit in 9/13 games for Nevada last season, with it standing out when categorized by non-conference games (4-1) and by road games that Nevada was favored in (2-0).
The over hit in 7/12 games for the Aggies.
UConn at Utah State (Over 60.5)
Utah State heads into this matchup as a favorite, which may push college football betting users to bet the over.
The Utah State Aggies had all three games go over their projected total in 2021, crushing the over by more than two touchdowns per game (+14.5 per game).
UConn on the road as an underdog proved to be an excellent bet on the over as well in 2021, with the over hitting in four of five games.
Charlotte at Florida Atlantic (-7.5)
The Florida Atlantic Owls did not inspire many to bet on them to cover the spread last season, going only 4-7-1 ATS overall. But playing against the Charlotte 49ers should give them a chance to get back in college football bettors good graces again.
Charlotte struggled terribly as an underdog and on the road in 2021. They went 1-4-1 as the road team, 1-6-1 as an underdog, and 0-4-1 as a road underdog. Betting against Charlotte was an excellent bet, which couples nicely with the Owls’ ability to at least cover as a home favorite (2-2-1).
The best bet has to be on Florida Atlantic to cover the spread. Florida Atlantic also beat Charlotte 38-9 last season.
Vanderbilt at Hawaii (Under 55)
The Vanderbilt Commodores travel to Hawaii to take on the Rainbow Warriors in the game that will wrap up the opening weekend of College Football. With an over/under of 55 points, bettors may not want to stay awake for this 10:30 EST time game as it appears poised to go under.
This game will be the first road game that Vanderbilt will be favored in since 2017, but what really proves important to bettors is how often Vanderbilt has gone under on the road since then. Since 2017, the over has only hit in 9/24 games that Vanderbilt has been the road team for, while also hitting in only 4/15 games that Vanderbilt has been favored in.
College football season may still be a few weeks away but getting in on the action early may be a prudent move before lines get changed.
