BRENTFORD – Brentford striker Ivan Toney is suspended immediately from all football-related activity after being charged with 262 betting breaches on Wednesday. Toney joins the recent crowd of suspended footballers involved with unlawful betting.
After originally being charged with 232 betting breaches, Toney received 30 more charges from betting breaches committed between March 2017 and February 2019. Toney breached Rule E8 of the betting rules and regulations posted by the English Football Association (FA).
Rule E8 on Betting states that “A Participant shall not bet, either directly or indirectly, or instruct, permit, cause or enable any person to bet on the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of, or occurrence in or in connection with, a football match or competition; or any other matter concerning or related to football anywhere in the world.”
The rules emphasize that any player, manager, staff member, or anyone who serves a role on a football club cannot place a wager at any legal online betting site on any football competition around the world. This includes football agents, who are prohibited from delivering “insider information” regarding a players transfer or future team selection.
No statements have been made regarding how Toney received the charges, but the Brentford striker has admitted to breaking the English Football Association’s betting rules.
Brentford FC awaits a publication from the independent Regulatory Commission regarding the listed reasons of Toney’s charges prior to making any further club decisions. The English club is ninth on the English Premier League table.
Ivan Toney ranks third in the EPL with 20 goals scored this season. Brentford’s odds on legal sports betting sites will be affected by Toney’s absence.
