- PointsBet Canada and BetMGM Canada were fined by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.
- Their oversights included illegal advertisements surrounding their promotions and guarantees.
TORONTO – The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has given notice to BetMGM Canada and PointsBet Canada have each been given notice of an impending fine for violating the Registrar’s Standards for Internet Gaming.
BetMGM Canada received a $48,000 fine for not complying with Standards 2.04 and 2.05, while PointsBet Canada was fined $30,000 for failing to comply with Standard 2.05.
PointsBet Canada Fined For Illegal Promotions
According to the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, rules are clearly in place to prevent sportsbooks from advertising “bonuses and other gambling inducements.” Canadian sports betting rules are the only one of that nature in the world, but rules are rules.
The AGCO states that multiple products were posted on the GO trains by PointsBet Canada that insinuated such bonuses may have existed.
PointsBET Canada has since owned up to its mistake and stated that it will follow the legal guidelines in the future.
Illegal Promotions And Guarantees Lead To BetMGM Canada’s Fine
BetMGM Canada was penalized not only for violating the law about promoting bonuses, but they blatantly ignored standard 2.04 that prevents legal sports betting sites for insinuating that betting more increases a bettors chance of winning.
They clearly violated the law when they tweeted “the more money you put in per bet, the higher your chance of winning.” on April 10th. If they did not purposely break the law, this would be a pretty egregious oversite.
