DraftKings Begs for Voided Bets Despite Record-Setting Month

• DraftKings Sportsbook set new monthly records in Massachusetts for sports betting revenue and handle in October.

• Massachusetts players placed $4,182.36 and won $575,436 on the incorrect NBA player props.

BOSTON – DraftKings dominated the Massachusetts sports betting market in October, setting record monthly highs for revenue and handle. The Bay State operator earned $33.5 million from $304.8 million in sports betting handle.

Both measures are legal sports betting records for a single operator in Massachusetts, who launched sports betting in March 2023. October showed an 11.6% overall increase in Massachusetts handle from September.

DraftKings’ huge month propelled October to be the second-highest monthly betting handle since April, when Bay Staters placed over $579 million in wagers. FanDuel, DrafKings’ biggest national competitor, finished second with $15.5 million in revenue and $155.6 million in sports betting handle.

DratfKings’ legal Massachusetts sports betting numbers for October translate to 54.8% of the monthly market share. Outside of FanDuel (28%), no other sports betting operator held more than 7% of the Massachusetts online sports betting market.

DraftKings Still Searching For Refunds

Despite their record-breaking month, DraftKings requested 178 bets to be voided in Thursday’s meeting with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. The bets worth $4,182 account for a total liability of $575,436 from an NBA prop market error.

DraftKings offered their first quarter NBA betting props with full market projections, an error that stood for 13 minutes during the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers game on Oct. 24. Will these advantageous bettors capitalizing on an error lose their money?

According to the DraftKings House Rules located on the Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s website, “DraftKings will not cancel or void a wager due to an “obvious error” without prior approval of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (“MGC”). The section later explains one example of an “obvious error” that fits the current situation.

“Bets have been offered, placed and/or accepted due to an Error,” claims one of the circumstances of an obvious error. In Thursday’s meeting, the Sports Wagering Division claimed they have “no reservations” in permitting DraftKings to void the bets.
