- After an investigation, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) has ruled that FanDuel must pay out on disputed soccer bets.
- Earlier in mid-July, soccer bets were made on odds that may have been offered in error by the bookmaker.
- The ruling comes after weeks of sports bettors not being able to collect their winnings or reclaim their original stakes.
TRENTON, N.J.- New Jersey’s Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) has officially declared that FanDuel is responsible for paying out gambling wages to soccer bettors amidst odds controversy.
The odds in question were wagers made on the Premier League, MLS, La Liga, and Serie A matches that may have been posted in error.
Bets were made from July 12 to July 15, with tens of thousands of dollars being wagered and resulted in more than $100,000 in wins.
FanDuel Must Pay
FanDuel’s initial reason for withholding payment was because they blamed the vendors for posting the erroneous lines.
The errors were on the prices of the goal lines on the soccer bets. For example, odds on a soccer team at plus five goals were set at -134 instead of the potential -4,000 it should have been set at. Other traditional goal lines, such as +1 or +2 were also off, resulting in bigger payouts on wins.
This led to the investigation of the FanDuel Sportsbook and the current result of them having to pay out the wins.
“Today, the [Division of Gaming Enforcement] ruled that a total of 10 online customers and one retail customer who placed wagers on erroneous multiple soccer markets should be paid out after an investigation into a new bet type that was installed by a vendor incorrectly resulted in erroneous lines being made available to customers,” said Kevin Hennessy, spokesman for FanDuel, in a statement to ESPN.
“FanDuel Sportsbook appreciates the DGE looking into this matter on our behalf. We regret that this error happened, believe it is important for customers to know that there is a review process for these issues, and thank the DGE for their collaboration in the matter. Customers impacted will receive their winnings in their online accounts immediately and our retail customer has been contacted to come into the Meadowlands to receive his winnings.”
Over a dozen wagers will be paid out to legal sports betting patrons after the DGE’s official assessment. FanDuel is hoping an event like this never happens again in the future.
