WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. – After an almost six-month drought of online sports betting in West Virginia, sports bettors in the Mountaineer State can now welcome FanDuel Sportsbook.
On Monday, The Greenbrier announced in a press release the launch of the state’s first mobile sports wagering app since the indefinite shutdown of the BetLucky app in March.
“We are incredibly excited that this new app is available for download, and the timing couldn’t be better with football season and A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier right around the corner,” said Dr. Jill Justice, President of the Greenbrier.
“We hope fans across the state will try out the app and then some visit the amazing FanDuel Sportsbook retail location here at America’s Resort.”
FanDuel Sportsbook at The Greenbrier first launched in September of 2018. However, unlike other sports betting lounges in West Virginia, The Greenbrier is a private resort. This may add to the reason why the Greenbrier hasn’t been able to have nearly the same success as other states.
FanDuel also operates a state-wide mobile sports betting platform in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. In New Jersey, FanDuel’s online partnership with Meadowlands Racetrack accounted for the majority of online sports bets in the state during the month of July.
In Pennsylvania, FanDuel was able to rake in $3.3 million in online sports betting handle through just 9 days of operating in the same month.
FanDuel’s online presence has become a dominant force in those states, but the company’s West Virginia sports betting app differs in a very important way. Those that have a preexisting daily fantasy sports account with FanDuel in West Virginia can use that same account to fund their online sports bets.
This is because rather than using GAN to work their backend technology, FanDuel is instead using its own proprietary wallet technology in the Mountaineer State. For now, this will give it a distinct advantage over any other legal sports betting sites that come to West Virginia.
