AMES, Iowa – Iowa State’s starting quarterback Hunter Dekkers faces sports betting accusations for wagering on team sports, including football games that he played in. A complaint filed by the Story County Attorney’s Office charges Dekkers with tampering with records involving sports betting.
According to the Des Moines Register, a DraftKings account controlled by Dekker’s made 366 wagers for a total of $2,799. 26 of those wagers were on Iowa State sporting events, including one wager on the 2021 football game against Oklahoma State in which he was the backup.
NCAA student-athletes who bet on their own games or other school sports potentially face permanent loss of eligibility.
“Student-athletes who engage in activities to influence the outcomes of their own games or knowingly provide information to individuals involved in sports betting activities will potentially face permanent loss of collegiate eligibility in all sports. This would also apply to student-athletes who wager on their own games or on other sports at their own schools.”
In addition to betting on his own games, nearly 300 of the 366 wagers were placed with Dekkers’ being under the Iowa sports betting minimum age of 21. Tampering charges filed in the complaint come from Dekkers disguising his identity and making it appear as if others were making the bets.
The prominence of legal sports betting in Iowa State athletics doesn’t just stop with quarterback Hunter Dekkers. Another current and one former Iowa State football player involved in the Iowa State sports betting scandal made wagers on Iowa State football games.
Other Iowa State Athletes Involved in Sports Betting
Dodge Sauser placed 12 wagers on Iowa State football games and currently plays offensive line for the Iowa State Cyclones. A DraftKings account controlled by Sauser placed $3,075 worth of wagers including four Iowa State football games last season.
Hunter Dekkers’ former teammate Enyi Uwazurike is also facing a complaint of tampering with records for placing two wagers on Iowa State games that he played in. Authorities allege that Uwazurike placed wagers in games against Kansas and Iowa that season.
The NFL recently indefinitely suspended Uwazurike for betting on NFL games and now the complaint claims 32 wagers on Denver Broncos games were made by Enyi Uwazurike.
