DES MOINES, Iowa. Iowa saw a spike in sports betting activity in August. Many of which can be attributed to the progressing NBA, MLB, and NHL seasons.

The Hawkeye State took in a total of $50,313,674.41 in betting handle in August. This is the most in wagers since Iowa was forced to shut down its gambling operations due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Iowa saw a boom in betting activity across all of its major casinos, making sports betting once again a major revenue source for the Hawkeye State.

August Shows Growth

Iowa sports bettors have been very active in August with the return of sports. The Hawkeye state saw a significant increase in betting activity throughout the month.

According to the official reports by the Iowa Revenue Commission, the Hawkeye state saw a total of $202,315.57 in revenue from sports wagers. This includes online and retail sports betting.

The bulk of the sports bets being made came from online and mobile betting. Almost $35 million was wagered online while just over $15 million came from retail sportsbooks.

The Prairie Meadows Racetrack & Casino sportsbook saw the biggest traffic in sports betting with more than $14 million in betting handle. Over $13 million of which came from online and mobile betting.

The large internet betting handle can be attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic having many sports bettors staying home.

Per the report, the casinos with the most in betting handle were the ones with a strong online betting presence. Operators like the Horseshow Casino Council Bluffs betting handle was under $2 million as it had zero wagers taken online.

This shows the huge impact that legal online sports betting has on the overall betting market.

All in all, these betting numbers show a massive interest in sports betting in Iowa. With the return of sports and the reopening of popular betting operations, these numbers are only expected to continue growing.
