WHEELING, W. Va. – Sportsbooks in two states have already reported their October monthly sports wager numbers, and Iowa handled a record-breaking amount.
Sportsbooks in Iowa generated roughly $6.5 million in revenue, over half of which came from online legal sports betting.
Iowa October Sports Betting Handle Comparison

This shows a remarkable 529% year-over-year increase from last year’s October numbers, and is the highest monthly sports betting handle for Iowa sportsbooks on record.
This also means that Iowa sportsbooks saw a 33.5% increase on the previous record of $210.4 million of September.
West Virginia’s October Sports Betting Numbers
West Virginia also reported an hefty October handle to the tune of $61.7 million. That’s a 2.7% increase from the previous month of September’s $60.1 million handle.
Although this is not the highest betting handle West Virginia sportsbooks have seen. In September of 2020, sportsbooks in West Virginia handled over $76 million in sports wagers, setting a record that has yet to be broken.
Although West Virginia sportsbooks did set a revenue record in September when they made $7.1 million, October saw a 62.6% decrease, only bringing in roughly 4.4 million
This is only the tip of the sports betting revenue iceberg however, as more state-sanctioned sportsbooks reports their October numbers, the more we’ll be able to see just how profitable this NFL season has been so far.
