- Las Vegas and the state of Nevada are getting ready to break records on wagers for the Super Bowl.
- The record to beat is $158.6 million in bets on the game which was taken in 2018.
- Bookmakers believe that Mahomes will be the key factor in the record number of bets that will be taken.
MIAMI – The sportsbooks of Las Vegas are preparing themselves for what they believe will be a record number of bets for Super Bowl 54.
Why are oddsmakers expecting to shatter the glass ceiling in wagers this year for the big game? The answer is the playing ability of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Mahomes- KC’s Key To Success
The Chiefs have become the 1.5-point favorites to win SB54 and that’s all due to Mahomes being on the field.
“What I saw that makes Kansas City favored is Patrick Mahomes is the best player in the NFL,” said John Murray, Westgate SuperBook director. “The public is going to want to bet on Mahomes.”
Originally, the betting lines were balanced between both the San Francisco 49ers and the Chiefs. However, as the bets started rolling in, it was clear that Kansas City was the clear favorite among sports bettors for the Super Bowl.
With about two weeks left until the Super Bowl, there is plenty of time to get wagers in on the game and not just in the state of Nevada. As it stands, the popular William Hill sportsbooks have taken a $100,000 wager on the moneyline for San Francisco (EVEN) and a $33,000 bet on the Kansas City Chiefs (-120) for their pick-em category.
The SuperBook has already taken a bet for $110,000 on the Over on a 52.5 total. Combined in just three wagers, that’s $233,000 on the game. Last year, Nevada took in $145.9 million throughout the 200 sportsbooks in the state.
The record for the state came from the 2018 Super Bowl where wagers amounted to $158.6 million. Vegas expects to surpass that number due to Mahomes and Mahomes alone.
Sports bettors can expect to see an enormous amount of prop bets for the Kansas City quarterback listed, as many people are interested in wagering on the star. For a variety of sportsbooks, prop betting makes up for over 50% of their wagers.
“We might have a record number of props on Mahomes,” said Nick Bogdanovich, William Hill sportsbook director. “It will be all Mahomes.
The San Francisco 49ers’ have a tremendous defense that may be able to keep Mahomes at bay. But the young quarterback is smart and knows how to move his way down the field one way or another.
With a breath of fresh air for Super Bowl 54 where the New England Patriots are no longer on the schedule, sportsbooks should be able to break their record. It was said that bettors had grown tired of wagering on the same team each year.
That along with the Mahomes factor will definitely see an influx of bets on the game and on the athlete himself. Throwing for 4031 yards and 26 touchdowns in the 2019 season, betting on him will help sportsbooks recoup some of the money they lost during the AFC/NFC Championship weekend.
Super Bowl 54 begins Sunday, February 2 at 6:30 p.m. EST and will be aired on the FOX network.
