KANSAS CITY, Mo. – DraftKings joined FanDuel and six professional sports teams in financially backing the Missouri sports betting ballot initiative. The legal sports betting giant put $3.5 million towards Winning for Missouri Education (WME), who recently got their sports betting initiative in position for a vote on the November 5 ballot.
The PAC collected 205,361 valid signatures in support of regulated Missouri sports betting through a constitutional amendment. While the measure only needed roughly 170,000 signatures to be sufficient, voters crushed the signature requirement and now earned a spot on the ballot.
“I further certify that this petition contains a sufficient number of valid signatures to comply with the Constitution of Missouri and Chapter 116, RSMo,” said John R. Ashcroft, Secretary of State of Missouri in the certificate of sufficiency of petition. “Therefore, this initiative petition shall be place on the ballot at the November 5, 2024 General Election.”
Regulated Missouri Sports Betting Proposal Details
The constitutional amendment would allow the Missouri Gaming Commission to regulate a licensed sports betting industry in Missouri that includes land-based (gambling boats), online sports betting, and mobile sports betting to those physically located in the state and over the age of 21 years old. It also includes a 10% wagering tax on revenue, which would result in $29 million annually based on the estimated $290 million annual Missouri sports betting market.
DraftKings and FanDuel financially support the measures since they would earn a large majority of that annual wagering revenue. Missouri pro sports teams such as the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Current, St. Louis Blues, St. Louis Cardinals, and St. Louis City SC also support a regulated sports betting industry in the state.
