ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Maryland Lottery and Gaming reported a 67.8% increase in handle from August to September. Promotional offers for the return of the football season influenced a betting handle of $442.5 million.
September legal sports betting numbers in Maryland showed the importance of football and mobile betting in the Old Line State. Mobile wagering accounted for 95% of the September sports betting handle.
Maryland reported $31.4 million in handle last September with only retail sports betting available. Residents wagered more than 13 times the amount from a year ago this September.
Football accounted for a total handle of $133.1 million in September. College football recorded roughly $57 million in wagers, while NFL betting was the most bet on sport for the month at roughly $76 million.
Baseball outpaced college football with $59.8 million in September, likely due to the hometown Baltimore Orioles claiming the American League East title. With the Orioles eliminated from the postseason and the Maryland Terrapins football team at a 5-1 record, college football is likely to surpass baseball in October’s report.
September Handle And Revenue Of Top Maryland Sportsbooks
FanDuel and DraftKings unsurprisingly were the most dominant legal online sportsbooks in September. FanDuel saw just under $20 million in gross revenue from a $175 million handle.
The mobile sports betting juggernaut held 11.4% of their legal Maryland sports betting wagers in September, while DraftKings barely got in the double-digit range with a 10.1% hold. DraftKings earned $15.5 million with a September handle of $154 million.
BetMGM, Caesars, and Fanatics earned over $1 million in gross revenue for September. Fanatics entered the eight-figure handle group for the first time with nearly $12 million in wagers.
