- The Massachusetts Gaming Commission unanimously denied LIV Golf from their state sports wagering catalog.
- The commission cited legal troubles and funding concerns as to why the Commonwealth will not be adding LIV Golf to the sportsbooks’ catalogs.
- Magic City Jai Alia was also denied approval, as well as slap fighting earlier in the year.
BOSTON – A proposal for adding LIV Golf to the Massachusetts sports betting catalog was unanimously denied by the state’s gaming commission.
DraftKings Sportsbook made the proposal to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC), but concerns over funding resulted in the Saudi-backed golf league’s denial. The decision applies to LIV Golf betting prior to the unified league with the PGA Tour and DP World Tour.
The future unified golf league raised concern among MGC voters, mostly based on the legal issues surrounding LIV Golf and now its future with other world golf leagues.
The MGC noted that the ongoing investigation into the LIV Golf and PGA Tour merger by the United States Department of Justice is one of their concerns with allowing LIV Golf betting in the Commonwealth.
Massachusetts Not Taking the Risk
In April, Ohio sportsbooks approved LIV Golf betting and became the seventh legal state having sportsbooks offerings odds on LIV Golf. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission decided it would be better off without the risk, as they also denied Magic City Jai Alai from their sports betting catalog for integrity concerns.
It’s unlikely that the addition to the legal Massachusetts sports betting catalog would drastically improve their overall revenue, with the risk being higher than the reward with LIV Golf. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission reported over $12 million in taxes collected from sports betting in the month of May.
It’s unsurprising that the commission is unwilling to take any risks to their constant legal sports betting cash flow.
