JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi sports betting revenue numbers from August have been released by the Mississippi Gaming Commission. Official numbers show a 184.6% increase month-on-month from July.
Mississippi has managed to see a big surge in sports betting activity in recent months. This can mainly be contributed to the return of sporting leagues like the NBA and the MLB along with the reopening of casinos.
Basketball was the most wagered on sport in August, with the remainder of the NBA season and the start of the NBA postseason enticing NBA sports bettors to head to their favorite Mississippi sportsbook and get in on the action.
Mississippi Sports Betting Boom
Mississippi sports betting was able to bounce back after being shut down by the coronavirus pandemic. Now the revenue numbers are even better than the numbers from this time last year.
The official report was released by the Gaming Commission to show an overall betting handle of $40,489,134,83 and with $3,748,731.90 in tax revenue.
Just under $20 million of that betting handle game from basketball wagers. Baseball, football, and parlay bets took a bulk of the remainder, with $721,220.70 coming from other sports like UFC, golf, tennis, and hockey betting.
The growth is expected to continue in September with the remainder of the NBA postseason, the NHL postseason, the MLB season, the US Open, and the biggest attraction, the NFL season coming into play.
Mississippi is one of the biggest sports betting markets in the country and with the many sporting leagues running simultaneously, the market is expected to capitalize greatly from the influx of wagers.
The betting handle is up 103.5% from this time last year in Mississippi as well, showing that more sports bettors are wagering and more bets are being taken overall. Betting handle is also up 412.7% from July to August in the month-on-month numbers.
Mississippi is likely to continue it’s legal sports betting rise, but sports bettors will have to wait for the official September numbers.
