Mississippi December Sports Betting Revenue Doubles In 2020

• Sports betting revenue hit $7.8 million in December, a 123.1% increase year over year.

JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi continues to see major growth in its local sports betting market in 2020. December numbers have more than doubled in revenue compared to 2019.

December also saw a larger sports betting handle month on month, although the increase in activity was only a slight one.

Although shutdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic derailed the local betting market earlier in 2020, Mississippi sports betting managed to finish the year strong with all-time highs in sports betting activity and revenue.

The Magnolia State has had a steady closing to the year in 2020, with record-breaking numbers pushing the market forward.

According to the official report released by the Mississippi Gaming Commission, $55,298,807.16 was wagered on sports in December, a slight increase from the $54.4 million wagered in November.

The state collected $7,762,542.39 in sports betting revenue which is a 123.1% increase from the $3.5 million collected in December 2019.

Football remains the number one sport in the state, with the bulk of the wagers coming from those betting on the NFL and college football betting.

Most wagers came from coastal casinos as Biloxi remains the biggest sports betting city in the Magnolia State. The region saw $37,608,832.30 wagered on sports and $4,917,232.11 collected in tax revenue, more than half of the total revenue collected in December.

Mississippi is able to see these major legal sports betting revenue numbers all without launching its own truly mobile betting market. Mobile betting only exists on location at retail sportsbooks.

Local lawmakers are pushing a mobile betting bill that could finally bring true mobile and online betting to the Magnolia State.

SB 9396 would launch online betting in the state and have the market run by the local casinos, similar to other thriving mobile betting markets.

Mobile sports betting has proven to be the driving force for success in many markets such as New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Nevada, and Colorado. Should Mississippi manage to launch its own market, then the revenue numbers are expected to skyrocket.

Until then, however, Mississippi still manages to see growth in legal sports betting every year since its launch.
