NCAA

  • The NCAA reported 175 infractions to their sports betting policy, along with 17 active investigations for policy violations.
  • NCAA President Charlie Baker told a Nevada Representative about the alarming numbers in a letter obtained by The Associated Press.

LAS VEGAS – The NCAA has 17 active investigations for sports betting violations and found 175 infractions to their sports betting policy since 2018. NCAA President Charlie Baker delivered the news of the sports betting struggles in a letter to Dina Titus, a Nevada representative inquiring about the topic.

The explosion of legal sports betting since the overturning of PAPSA in 2018 has influenced the increase in student-athlete sports betting violations. The NCAA understands this and recently adjusted their guidelines for sports betting violations to lighten penalties for “young people who have made mistakes.”

The changes also include a better education of the NCAA’s sports-betting policy for athletes, coaches, administrators, and staff involved with college sports programs.

According to the Associated Press report, Baker said in the letter that “athletes, coaches and administrators committed violations ranging from $5 wagers to “providing inside information” and that the active investigations have a similar span in severity.”

One of the likely sports betting violations by an NCAA coach would be the baseball coach firing of Alabama’s Brad Bohannon.

An investigation found that Brad Bohannon had a relationship with Bert Eugene Neff Jr., the man who tried to place a wager over $100,000 on LSU baseball. Security camera footage at the BetMGM Sportsbook could see Neff Jr. texting with Brad Bohannon, as Neff Jr. pleaded to the sportsbook staff that he needed to place the bet because he had inside information on the game.

The NCAA is taking the necessary steps to ensure that all sports betting events are kept without betting interference in hopes that integrity situations like these won’t happen again in the future.
