New York, Michigan to Ban Pick ‘Em Style DFS like PrizePicks

• Michigan will ban PrizePicks, Underdog, and other daily fantasy sports (DFS) operators that offer over/under props on individual player performance.
• The move comes one day after New York approved new DFS rules that ban the same Pick ‘Em style propositional bets.
• The DFS changes do not apply to FanDuel or DraftKings contests that offer player vs player contests rather than the player vs house method of Pick ‘Em entries.

NEW YORK – Daily fantasy sports faces another crackdown in Michigan, as regulators approved a ban on the prop-bet style games. New York approved similar regulations on Tuesday, banning the Pick ‘Em games offered by PrizePicks, Underdog Fantasy, and other prominent DFS operators.

The Joint Committee on Administrative Rules (JCAR) didn’t take action on proposed regulations, meaning the Michigan Gaming Control Board will adopt the rules banning Pick ‘Em style DFS. The Coalition of Fantasy Sports (CFS) created a form where DFS advocates can defend PrizePicks and other operators through email.

Their website reads “Right now Michigan lawmakers are considering rules that would ban specific fantasy sports games enjoyed by players across the state…Tell lawmakers to stop the fantasy sports ban!”

Although people sent over 2,500 emails to JCAR, their efforts fell short and Michigan will likely approve of the rules banning DFS Pick ‘Em games. Issues with the over/under props for player performances stem from their resemblance to legal sports betting offered in Michigan and New York.

DFS Operators Are Controversial Across the Country

The controversy towards the prop-style betting is even larger in states without regulated sports betting. Daily fantasy sports are a popular way to bet on the NFL in states like California or Florida where there aren’t sports betting regulations.

Florida regulators sent cease-and-desist letters to PrizePicks, Underdog, and Betr for offering the Pick ‘Em style contests. Regulators in New York, Michigan, and Florida all cracked down on DFS in the last 10 days.

It’s likely they won’t be the last states with daily fantasy sports to look into their policies with DFS contests.
