NHL Finds No Evidence Of Illegal Gambling From Evander Kane

NEW YORK – San Jose Sharks left winger Evander Kane was accused of illegal gambling by his estranged wife and the NHL ran a thorough investigation into those allegations.

No evidence of Kane throwing games or betting on or against his team at sportsbooks has been revealed through the investigation, as it has now come to a close. Kane is still under investigation for other allegations.

The San Jose Sharks are likely moving on from Kane, with both parties agreeing Kane will not be reporting to the team. This change has affected the Sharks’ odds to make the playoffs and total points in the upcoming season.

Kane Affected Sharks Odds

Kane was a major piece of the puzzle in the Sharks offense and the scandal clearly shifted lines with NHL betting sites.

Kane scored 22 goals for 49 points and put up 27 assists in 56 games during the 2020-2021 NHL season. He was the team’s leading scorer.

This controversy has turned his team against him though, with Sharks players saying they do not want Kane back for the new season.

Sports betting fans are accounting for Kane to be out of the lineup, hence why the UNDER is so heavily favored for total points and action.

The Sharks failed to make the playoffs last season, even with Kane playing, so “No” being the favored side of that wager is no surprise either.

The Investigation

The illegal gambling investigation was conducted by Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP and NHL Security. They used Sportradar data to analyze Kane’s betting behavior over the alleged times they took place.

“We requested and received from Sportradar bet monitoring reports and analyses on Sharks games from the latter part of the 2018-19 season, including the 2019 Playoffs, and the 2020-2021 season,” read the NHL’s official report. “Our review of public and non-public documents relating to Mr. Kane, including data and analysis from a leading sports integrity service, and our interviews of those individuals most familiar with Mr. Kane’s on-ice performance over the past three seasons yielded no evidence to corroborate Ms. Kane’s allegations that her husband gambled on NHL games or ‘threw’ hockey games.”

Even with this evidence, Kane’s time on the Sharks is likely over, and regulated sports betting operations are reflecting this in their odds for the NHL.
