- The National Hockey League announced they would be partnering with global sportsbook operator PointsBet in a multi-year deal.
- PointsBet will become an Official Sports Betting Partner of the NHL and could see their betting data and statistics used in live broadcasts as soon as the 2021-2022 season.
NEW YORK CITY – As the continuing integration of sports and betting evolves across the United States, the NHL has taken a major step in bringing betting to the forefront of their product.
Announced Tuesday, the NHL has inked a deal with sports betting retailer PointsBet to make the company the Official Sports Betting Partner of the NHL.
The NHL is looking to bring a betting aspect to their sport, and this deal with PointsBet is a groundbreaking partnership that could change the way hockey is experienced in the very near future.
Per the official release from the NHL, PointsBet will now have access to the media deal between the NHL and NBC Sports.
This means that viewers who watch hockey on NBC could see betting data and statistics like live moneyline odds, goal line, and player props as part of the regular broadcast media pre-game and during the action.
This deal would affect NHL games on NCS Sports, NBC Sports regional networks, Altitude TV, as well as others, and could take effect as soon as the 2021-2022 NHL season.
“As the sports betting landscape evolves at a rapid pace, we continue to develop unique, strategic alliances within the sports gaming industry,” said Keith Wachtel, the Chief Business Officer and Senior Executive Vice President of the NHL. “Our partnership with PointsBet brings to life our collaboration with our valued media partners and we look forward to enhancing our fan engagement opportunities in concert with both PointsBet and NBC. We are proud to welcome PointsBet to the NHL family.”
The deal extends to NHL media in both the USA and Australia and will allow PointsBet the rights to begin using official NHL marks and logos in their betting platform. Those who love to bet on NHL could soon be seeing this live data as part of an integrated betting media push.
PointsBet CEO Johnny Aitken is excited for the future potential of this deal.
“PointsBet is thrilled to become an official sports betting partner of the National Hockey League,” said Aitken. “The NHL’s on-ice product provides fans with captivating, nonstop action – it is a privilege to join forces with the NHL and its forward-thinking team, complementing that action with PointsBet’s sports betting product, the fastest sports betting app in market. We are excited to further elevate fan engagement via offering the most markets in the world for each NHL game, including our exclusive PointsBetting product, and enhance TV and digital integrations with mutual partners like NBC Sports.”
This move comes as another big win for the legal sports betting market in the US as part of an ongoing push for widespread legalization and a shift in public opinion on sports betting.
