RALEIGH, N.C. – North Carolina Lottery Commission Chairman Ripley Rand announced in Wednesday’s commission meeting that North Carolina online sports betting won’t launch before the Super Bowl. The announcement establishes a sports betting launch timeline between Feb. 11 and June 15 of 2024.
Chairman Rand concluded Wednesday’s legal North Carolina sports betting meeting with the unfortunate news for football fans. It’s unfortunate for the state as well, since they’ll miss out on offering bets for the biggest sports betting event of the year.
Sterl Carpenter, Deputy Executive Director of Gaming Compliance and Sports Betting for the North Carolina Lottery Commission, emphasized in both Wednesday meetings that North Carolina’s priority is to deliver a quality and finished sports betting product. The commission made steps towards the inevitable legal sports betting launch by approving three sports betting application forms.
The application submission deadline is Dec. 27, 2023 for sports betting operators. The North Carolina Sports Betting Committee will take 60 days for the review process and can extend that window up to 30 days if necessary.
Based on the number of expected legal online sportsbook application, the committee might need to use the extension. Carpenter stated that “We anticipate receiving hundreds of applications during this implementation phase.”
When Will North Carolina Sports Betting Launch?
The approved North Carolina sports betting law claims sports betting must launch no later than 12 months after the act becomes law. That means June 15, 2024 is the absolute latest date for a potential North Carolina mobile sports betting launch.
An exact date won’t be decided until operators are approved but Feb. 12, 2024 is now the earliest it could happen.
Still, the Sports Betting Committee and NC Lottery Commission agreed in Wednesday’s meeting that “it’s too early to set a start date for sports betting in North Carolina at this time.”
