RALEIGH, N.C. – North Carolina looks to be one of the biggest legal sports betting markets in the United States based on GeoComply reports from the first 48 hours after launch. The location detection software can detect how many active accounts there are, how many bets are being made, where the sign ups are coming from, and many other things.
GeoComply’s data revealed that roughly 370,000 people signed up for a legal sports betting account in the first 48 hours of mobile wagering in North Carolina. The users of these accounts logged in to their online sports betting accounts 5.36 million times during the first two days.

“It’s early, but North Carolina is already delivering on lawmaker expectations when they legalized online sports betting last year. The state’s well-structured approach to mobile sports betting safeguards consumers and opens up significant revenue streams. With March Madness around the corner, we are excited to see continued growth,” said Lindsay Slader, GeoComply’s SVP of Compliance in a news statement.
NC Mobile Launch Draws Attention From Other States
The Tarheel State generated more than 2.5 times the geolocation checks and active accounts that Virginia had when they launched sports betting during the same time frame. Although most attention is given to the North Carolina sports betting numbers, the launch has a significant impact on neighboring states without regulated sports betting like South Carolina and Georgia.
GeoComply noted that they’ve identified 6,175 South Carolina sports betting accounts attempting to access North Carolina regulated sportsbooks. They were denied, but South Carolina residents can always use Bovada for their legal sports betting needs.
The early success of North Carolina’s online sports betting launch could expedite the legal process in Georgia. The state has shown progress passing sports betting bills, but ultimately haven’t gotten to the finish line.
