Oddsmakers Confident Presidential Election Won’t Be Postponed

• The 2020 Presidential Election will happen in November if it is not affected by the COVID-19 outbreak.
• Sportsbooks have posted betting lines on whether or not the election date will be changed the way that the Democratic Primaries have been.

BOSTON – With nothing happening on schedule these days because of postponements and cancellations due to the Coronavirus pandemic, many are asking “will the 2020 Presidential Election be affected?”

Online sportsbooks, which currently have listings for a number of political bets, have new odds regarding the election for the presidency. This specific question has become the next in a long line of political wagers available.

Could The Election Be Postponed?

Former Vice President Joe Biden, who is currently campaigning for the Democratic party to get on the ballot for the 2020 Presidential Election, met with Jimmy Kimmel on Thursday to answer that very question.

Kimmel, a late-night television host, is holding web-based shows because of the current quarantines. The show is entitled “Jimmy Kimmel’s Quarantine Monologue.”

“Is it possible that Trump could postpone the presidential election?” Kimmel asked Biden.

“No, he doesn’t have the authority to do that,” responded Biden. “It is possible they may start a drumbeat saying it should be postponed.”

With the Democratic Primary polls being postponed because of COVID-19, there has been talk of a brokered convention in order to get a Democratic nominee on the ballot by July 2020. A brokered convention could very well change the path of the outcome as to which candidate will ultimately win a spot on the ballot.

The 2020 Presidential Election could also be postponed if the pandemic carries over into the Fall months. Big events like the Summer Olympics in Tokyo have already decided to reschedule the Games so an election for President being rescheduled is not so far-fetched if the nation is in the same state come November with the pandemic.

Should it be, the outcome could be vastly different than what would have originally occurred as so many things can change with candidates and how the public chooses to vote. But what are the odds of the election taking place in November as planned?

The wager open for bets on sportsbooks asks “Will the US Presidential Election take place on November 3, 2020?” The heavily favored answer by bookmakers is “Yes” (-700) while “No” is set at (+425).

The Endgame

The state of New York is pushing lawmakers to move their primary election to the end of June based on the outbreak and CDC guidelines for quarantine and social distancing.

This could also become a possibility when it comes time for the Presidential vote in the Fall.

With a little more than seven months until the 2020 Presidential Election, a lot can happen with the pandemic. As it stands, there are no discussions happening to change the date of the election and sportsbook betting odds seem to agree with that stance.
