COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Casino Control Commission’s (OCCC) Executive Director Matthew Schuler decided on Friday to prohibit betting on college player props in Ohio. The decision comes in response to NCAA President Charlie Baker and Ohio Governor Mike DeWine submitting a formal request to ban player props on college sports.
With the decision, regulated Ohio sportsbooks will no longer offer college player props effective immediately. However, sports betting sites in Ohio that are licensed internationally can legally offer college player props in OH
Why Did Ohio Ban College Player Props?
NCAA President Charlie Baker and OCCC Executive Director Matt Schuler cited player safety and integrity as the main influences for the prohibition on college player props. They also mentioned the betting influence on college students, risk of insider information, and match fixers influencing college athletes.
Eight legal sports betting sites in Ohio objected the request. These sportsbooks claimed they could investigate any customers over harassment of athletes, but the Commission approved the request anyway.
“Today’s decision by the Ohio Casino Control Commission to prohibit player-specific prop bets on collegiate competitions marks a significant step in the protection of student-athlete well-being and game integrity,” said NCAA President Charlie Baker in an Ohio Casino Control Commission release. “I thank The Commission for recognizing the serious threats posed by prop bets and implementing controls to help safeguard student-athlete mental-health from the risks of sports betting harassment and abuse.”
With the decision, Sunday’s NCAA basketball odds for Ohio State vs Michigan State will be limited to game props. That is unless you’re using Bovada to bet, as they offer legal college player prop betting in Ohio even after Friday’s decision.
