Online Iowa Sportsbooks No Longer Require In-Person Registration

• Iowa will forego in-person mobile sportsbook registration beginning in 2021.
• The Iowa sports betting law only required the in-person stipulation to be enforced until the end of 2020.
• On Jan. 1, all mobile sports wagering platforms in Iowa can be joined and used remotely by Iowans 21 and over.

DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa’s in-person registration requirement for sportsbooks has officially ended, giving sports bettors the ability to register for sports betting accounts remotely beginning on Friday.

This is big news for the Hawkeye State as having to go to a land-based venue first was hindering the number of gamblers with access to wager on sporting events from home.

And it was even harder to make it out to sportsbook locations during the thick of the Coronavirus Pandemic. However, remote mobile sportsbook registration could not come at a better time as the Iowa State Cyclones will play the Oregon Ducks in the Fiesta Bowl on Saturday.

What Iowa Sports Bettors Should Expect

It is shaping up to be a very happy new year for all sports betting enthusiasts in Iowa that have not yet signed up with one of the many online and mobile sportsbook platforms available in the state.

Gambling on sports via mobile applications went live in the Hawkeye State in August of 2019 and by law, all people that registered for an account needed to do so in-person through the end of 2020.

Once 2021 rolled around, that stipulation within the law would no longer be a factor, giving residents the opportunity to sign up for sportsbook memberships from home.

There are multiple options for Iowans looking to gamble on sports matchups using their cellphone. Some of the biggest sports wagering operators in the nation have online sportsbooks in Iowa.

Not only will this be the first time in Iowa state history that mobile sportsbooks can be legally used on a completely remote basis from the start, this is also the first Fiesta Bowl in the Cyclones’ football program’s history.

Anyone in the Hawkeye State that is 21 or over is eligible to sign up to engage in sports betting and place wagers on the Fiesta Bowl and a number of other sporting events online.

College basketball fans can enjoy gambling on the games entirely from home now with the Iowa Hawkeyes getting into the fun part of their season and ranking in the top ten. It just might be a banner type of year to start off for collegiate sports in Iowa and their fans statewide.
