LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – After online sports betting in Arkansas was regulated on March 4, there have been some issues concerning mobile betting in the Land of Opportunity. Betting launched in online fashion from the Southland Casino and March 5 and can only be used from computers and laptops such as Mac and PC.
While mobile sports betting in Arkansas is also regulated, it has yet to launch. One of the biggest reasons for this is due to the significant tax rate on it which is set at 51%.
Because of this, some of the biggest names in legal online sports betting such as FanDuel and DraftKings have stood their ground from launching within the Arkansas state lines.
“The legislation is very unique in Arkansas; it presents the operators with a lot of other considerations—The margin for the operator is really very small, so if you were cutting into that margin even more so from a market share perspective and a profit share it just creates new considerations,” said Doug Terfehr, a representative from Maximbet.
The only mobile sports betting operator that is expected to launch fairly soon in Arkansas is coming from Saracen Casino in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
The Origin Of Arkansas Sports Betting
Legal sports betting in Arkansas came to life back in 2018 after the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was repealed allowing states to regulate betting. Following the regulation in 2018, betting went live in the states in July of 2019 for in-person betting only.
There are currently three operating sportsbooks in Arkansas including Betly sportsbook at Southland Casino in West Memphis, Saracen Casino Sportsbook in Pine Bluffs, and Oaklawn Race and Sportsbook in Hot Springs.
The mobile sports betting bill in Arkansas allows each casino operator to partner with commercial sportsbooks to offer mobile options. Time will tell if these partnerships will be made.
