- Multiple regulated sportsbooks either crashed or saw technical difficulties during Super Bowl 55 due to heavy traffic.
- MGM Resorts sportsbook in Nevada couldn’t offer live in-game betting due to system failures.
- Barstool Sportsbook, FanDuel, BetMGM, and DraftKings all saw technical issues during the game.
TAMPA, Fla. – Sports bettors were active during Super Bowl 55 to the point that several sportsbooks saw major technical difficulties.
The issues were caused by heavy traffic and wagers on specific bets. This caused sites to crash and systems to be unable to accept bets.
While many sports bettors were rightfully upset over the technical issues, this is an example of how popular legal sports betting has become that current servers aren’t enough to handle major sporting events like the Super Bowl.

The BetMGM sportsbook in Nevada was incapable of hosting live in-game betting due to heavy traffic hurting affecting the servers. Sports bettors bet on the Super Bowl to such a high degree that the MGM Resorts had to shut everything down.
Mobile betting apps also saw major issues. Barstool Sportsbook, BetMGM, DraftKings, and FanDuel all saw technical difficulties that caused their apps to crash, bets to not go through, and overall lag on the sites.
“It appears this outage was caused by a surge in traffic that caused problems for our backend provider,” said DraftKings in a statement on the technical difficulties. “Our DFS (Daily Fantasy Sports) and pools products, supported by in-house technology, are functioning without issue. This incident is why we believe owning our own technology is important.”
Many frustrated NFL bettors publicly voiced their anguish via social media. FanDuel Sportsbook received a lot of criticism as the popular betting provider advertised its sportsbook leading up to the game.
This was the most wagered on Super Bowl in history. There were several new markets that launched in 2020 and 2021, which means all new players were able to legally bet on The Big Game. Even with that knowledge, it seems sportsbooks weren’t expecting the amount of traffic they received.
More states are expected to launch their own legal sports betting markets before the next Super Bowl. In addition, current legal states may launch more sportsbooks within their markets. The next Super Bowl may even be bigger than this past year in terms of legal sports betting which means these platforms can’t be surprised for Super Bowl 56.
