HARRISBURG, Penn. – Those betting on sports in Pennsylvania were very active in January, boasting record highs in betting handle to start the year.

Sports betting revenue was also high, although it was a slightly lower month-over-month from the December revenue numbers.

The bulk of the wagers came from online and mobile sportsbooks. Online gaming has been the primary way Pennsylvania sports betting fans wager for months.

Pennsylvania Hits $600 million

The official report released by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board shows that $615,294,827 was wagered on sports in January; breaking the $548,590,065 record set in December.

Sportsbooks collected $33,970,396 in gross revenue, with the state seeing $11,549,935 in tax revenue. Overall, sports betting revenue is slightly down month-over-month.

The real story is that legal sports betting in Pennsylvania is primarily done online. $579,941,653 came from online and mobile sportsbooks; 94% of the total wagers made. Retail sportsbooks saw $35,353,174.

While the December activity saw 97.6% of all wagers made online, January numbers are still impressive. Online sports betting has been the primary way Pennsylvania sports betting fans choose to wager for months, and it seems to be staying that way.

The biggest mobile sportsbook in the state continues to be FanDuel, which saw $220 million wagered online, holding 38% of the market share. DraftKings holds 24.7%, seeing a $143.5 million bet on sports.

Barstool Sportsbook came in third place, with $65 million wagered at the online sportsbook for 11% of the online market share.

By the numbers, Pennsylvania is the third-largest sports betting market behind New Jersey and Nevada. The Keystone State is also just the third state to cross the $600 million thresholds.

Pennsylvania should continue to see these major betting handles for the next few months. February will see the results of Super Bowl betting, and March will see the results of those betting on March Madness.

The Pennsylvania sports betting market is a thriving one and looks to stay that way in the near future.
