Political Betting Odds Favor The Hyde Amendment To Stay In Place

WASHINGTON – Political sports betting fans have been placing heavy action on the state of the Hyde Amendment at online sportsbooks.

The Hyde Amendment of 1977 bars federal funds from being used to pay for abortions. This puts abortions in the hands of state lawmakers to decide if they would fund abortions or if it will not be covered.

President Joe Biden recently released his budget, which excluded the Hyde Amendment, leading to many believing Biden is working to reverse the amendment. Biden has also publicly opposed the Hyde Amendment during his 2020 Presidential campaign.

The Hyde Amendment

Despite these moves by Joe Biden, political betting fans have been leaning against the amendment being reversed.

The Hyde Amendment is a major talking point for the Biden administration. In the past, Biden was in support of the Hyde Amendment but the President changed his tune in 2019 when his campaign saw backlash from the Democrat Party.

“If I believe health care is a right, as I do, I can no longer support an amendment that makes that right dependent on someone’s zip code,” said Biden.

One of the core reasons Biden gained much support within the party was due to this stance so Biden would be active in working to reverse the bill. Sports betting fans aren’t expecting Biden to be able to do so, however, as despite the support from the Democrats, there is major pushback with the opposition. According to the Knights of Columbus Marist Poll, 58% of Americans oppose the use of public funds for abortions.

Additionally, the amendment would need a two-thirds majority vote to be reversed, something that Biden has failed to garner throughout his early presidency on many potential bills.

Betting fans are looking at the failed results of the Biden administration to move Republican lawmakers as a clear reason to bet against the bill’s reversal. Longshot betting fans should still lean in on the odds at legal sports betting sites as the support for the bill’s reversal is just as loud as the opposition.

Many advocates have viewed the Hyde Amendment as discriminatory and viewed it as a federal ban on abortions for many citizens.

“We are thrilled that President Biden kept his campaign promise and submitted a budget without the Hyde amendment,” said Destiny Lopez, the co-president of All* Above All, a reproductive justice organization that has led the effort to repeal abortion coverage bans. “The Hyde amendment has, for more than 40 years, denied insurance coverage of abortion for people working to make ends meet and today will mark the first time in literal decades that our president has submitted a budget without the Hyde amendment.”

While in the past both Democrat and Republican lawmakers have upheld the amendment due to pressure from voters, it seems the new generation of voters could affect their decision this time around.
