CHICAGO – As part of a large gambling overhaul that is set to change the course of the gaming industry in the Prairie State, the Illinois Gaming Board (IGB) has issued out a new set of rules under their emergency rule-making authority for hopeful casino license holders to abide by.
Under the new rules, licensure applicants will have to share any information on ethical violations to the IGB. These violations could have come from the applicant themselves, by an employee of the applicant, or anyone related to a violation in any way.
“The purpose of the emergency rule is to further strengthen the IGB’s existing ethics requirements and enhance the transparency of the casino license selection process authorized under the Illinois Gambling Act,” said Marcus Fruchter, board administrator in a statement to the News Tribune.
IL SB 690, which was signed into law by IL Governor J.B. Pritzker in June, authorized the construction of six new casinos in the state. That piece of legislation also legalized sports betting in Illinois.
The brick-and-mortar casinos will be located in Chicago, Rockford, Danville, Waukegan, Williamson County, and the Cook County suburb. While it has not been confirmed, many are expecting these locations to offer Illinois sports betting in the future.
Being able to comply with the IGB’s new standards will be the first step for any potential operators to build a casino in those cities. However, because these provisions were made through an emergency procedure, they will only remain in effect for 150 days.
After that, the IGB will have to go through the usual process of introducing new rules. This means they will have to issue out a public notice and conduct public hearings.
The emergency rules could help to speed up the process for casino construction in six cities, but what it means for a sports betting timeline launch is still uncertain. Those looking to offer legal sports betting will have to follow these same provisions in order to obtain a sports wagering license.
