EDIT: The new at sea wager experience will be available on the entire fleet of Princess MedallionClass ships when cruising resumes. However it will not be available on Pacific Princess since that vessel was just sold and is no longer in the Princess fleet.
- Princess Cruises will be adding legal sports betting to its MedallionClass cruise ships once the company starts producing trips again.
- Since the ships will be offshore, they can legally provide sports betting.
- The sportsbook will be powered by Ocean Casino.
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Once Princess Cruises begins offering trips again, sports bettors will be able to get in on the action with the MedallionClass cruises.
The popular cruise line announced the rebranding of its Pacific Princess ships into the new holder of the newly found Ocean Sportsbook.
Betting on the cruise ships is legal since the sportsbook will not operate until they are completely offshore, therefore away from US regulation. This is one of the only ways California sports betting can take place.
Cruise Betting
The Ocean Sportsbook, powered through the Ocean Casino will be offering up to date curated betting lines and odds. The hope is for sports betting to drive up the customer base once trips are offered again.
“On Princess MedallionClass cruises our guests can stay connected with their friends and family around the world, and now with Ocean Sportsbook, they can also stay connected to their favorite teams and wager on a host of events whenever they sail with us,” said Jan Swartz, president of Princess Cruises. “Taking a cruise vacation no longer means being disconnected from a big game, an iconic event or friends and family.”
The Ocean Casino is powered digitally, allowing guests to wager from anywhere on the cruise ship. This includes in their stateroom, poolside, in the launch hall, or while sitting outside on the deck.
The convenience aspect is what Princess Cruises is hoping will separate its offering from the competition. In addition, Princess Cruises promises a superior Wi-Fi position to ensure everything runs smoothly for patrons.
“A fully-connected guest experience now goes well beyond a superior Wi-Fi position, and Ocean Sportsbook reinforces the unparalleled position MedallionClass enjoys in the industry,” said John Padgett, chief experience and innovation officer for Carnival Corporation. “Wagering is now seamlessly fused into the overall guest experience in both digital and physical interactions all powered by the OCEAN Guest Experience Platform.”
The addition of the Ocean Sportsbook to its MedallionClass cruise ships could be brought on in an attempt to drive up revenue once cruises are able to offer trips again.
With the COVID-19 shutdowns, cruise ships were forced to cancel all trips for months, leading to no revenue for the stretch. In addition, guests may not be motivated to jump back on cruises immediately when they return due to fear.
However, Princess Cruises could drive up the revenue with offering legal sports betting as sports bettors could be motivated to take a cruise if just to place action on major sporting events.
