MONTICELLO, N.Y. – It’s a process that has been years in the making, but legal sports betting in New York is only a few weeks away. One of the locations set to pioneer this new industry is Resorts World Catskills, one of the largest commercial casinos in the state.
Resorts World Catskills was one of four gaming establishments that were approved to host sports betting through a 2013 voter referendum. The Monticello-based gaming establishment is owned by the parent company, Empire Resorts, and officially opened their doors in February of 2018.
“As we work towards opening our Resorts World Catskills Casino Resorts sportsbook, we look forward to bringing our guests, sports fans, and visitors the best experience in the market,” said Ryan Eller, President & CEO of Empire Resorts in a statement.
“Our sportsbook construction is already complete, and we look forward to opening it at the first opportunity – which we expect will be in late Summer and in time for football season.”
Only a few more steps are needed for Resorts World Catskills to start accepting sports wagers.
On June 10, 2019, the New York State Gaming Commission (NYGC) officially approved sports betting regulations for retail sportsbooks to follow. Those regulations will now have to be published by the State Register. That is expected to occur sometime next week.
Once that happens, the NYGC will be able to accept sports betting applications and issue licenses to approved retail sportsbooks in New York. That process could last a few more weeks.
“Resorts World Catskills thanks the New York State Gaming Commission for its hard work in moving the regulatory process forward,” said Eller.
A new sportsbook would add to the already tremendous amount of gaming opportunities provided by the resort. The property already holds a gaming space that encompasses 65,000 square-feet and features 102 table games, 16 poker tables, and over one thousand slot machines.
Those looking for activities beyond gambling, there are also nine different dining options, varied entertainment events, a relaxing spa, and hotel options for parties of all sizes.
Resorts World Catskills will be the closest N.Y. sportsbook to New York City. This will provide residents of the big city and surrounding area a great weekend getaway during football season and beyond.
