PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sports betting in Rhode Island was very active, managing to set the single-month wagering record in January.
Sports betting activity increase after Rhode Island was able to reopen retail sportsbooks in January. The Ocean State was forced to close facilities due to COVID-19 protocols.
While sports betting activity saw an increase, the Rhode Island sports betting market also saw major gains in sports betting revenue in January as well, making January an overall successful month.
New Betting Record
The Rhode Island Lottery reported $39,817,327 in betting handle for January. This is a 57.1% increase month over month from the $22.7 million wagered in December.
The revenue sportsbooks gathered in January is also up month over month, with $3,717,200 collected at sportsbooks. This is up 48% from the $2.5 million in revenue collected the previous month.
The story is the reopening of retail casinos that offer sports betting. The two casino locals Twin River Casino and Tiverton Casino were closed in December due to COVID-19 spikes in the state but were able to offer wagers in January.
The more popular sportsbook being Twin River which saw $13,091,104 wagered and accounted for $1,032,995 of the total book revenue. The Tiverton Casino saw $4,840,785 wagered on sports and collected $539,924 in January.
Even with the return of retail sportsbooks mobile and online betting were the primary way Rhode Island players bet on sports with $21,885,438 in wagers made on mobile apps. Most of the sports betting revenue came from mobile books as well, with $2,144,280 collected.
Rhode Island’s January numbers could be a good sign for things to come. Sports betting fans would have been wagering on the Super Bowl in February, which would surely lead to bigger numbers in betting handle and revenue.
In addition, the NBA season is in full swing and March Madness is around the corner. It would not be surprising if Rhode Island manages to reset their legal sports betting record in the coming months.
