CHARLESTON, W.V. – Sports betting fans in West Virginia were slightly less active, but local sportsbooks managed to collect big in sports betting revenue in May.
Mobile betting maintained its position as the primary way betting fans wagered on sports in West Virginia. The mobile betting market dominated despite the overall decline in activity.
West Virginia sports betting can still chalk up May as a successful month, as despite the steady decline the West Virginia sportsbooks have seen in activity, the revenue spike is the real story of the month.
West Virginia Revenue Report
According to the official report released by the West Virginia Lottery Commission, sportsbooks saw $25.5 million in wagers, down 3.8% month over month from the $26.5 million collected in April.
Sports betting revenue was up a whopping 38% month over month, with sportsbooks collecting $2.7 million in May compared to the $1.9 million seen in April.
The state collected $228,485 in May from sports betting tax revenue, up from the $165,922 collected in April.
Mobile betting continued to be the main way players bet on sports in West Virginia. Mobile sportsbooks saw $18.4 million of the total wagers in May.
This is a 72.1% hold on the total market. Mobile betting is, however, down 7.3% from the $19.8 million sportsbooks saw in April.
Sports betting dropping in activity for two consecutive months in West Virginia is interesting, as there are active sporting events ongoing and other markets managed to bounce back from the decline in activity in April.
West Virginia betting fans may place more action during the summer. Local bettors have the NBA and NHL Playoffs to wager on, as well as the continued MLB season and several tennis, golf, and NASCAR events ongoing.
Additionally, the 2021 Summer Olympics is incoming and sports betting fans in West Virginia will surely be placing heavy action on this once every four-year event.
