After almost a year of being shut down, two sportsbooks in West Virginia are back.

  • Both Wheeling Island and Mardi Gras Casinos were down since March 2019.
  • The two casinos are owned and operated by Delaware North.
  • Delaware North is now working with IGT to operate the new Betly Sportsbooks.

CROSS LANES, W. Va. – After almost an entire year after their failed first launch, the Mardi Gras and Wheeling Island casinos have relaunched their sportsbooks.

On Monday, the Mardi Gras Casino tweeted that their sportsbook is back. Both of these casinos are operated by Delaware North.

This all started nearly a year ago when both sportsbooks were forced to suddenly shut down. Previously, Delaware North sportsbooks were operated by Miomni Gaming. But then Miomni entered a contract dispute with EnterG. Due to that, both sportsbooks were shut down.

After several months, Delaware North got out of their contract with Miomni and pursued new sports betting operators in West Virginia They have partnered with IGT and Delaware North stated they feel confident moving forward.

The Madness In West Virginia

Although the casino tweeted that their sportsbook was back on Monday, both sportsbooks opened last Friday, meaning both of them were able to take bets on Super Bowl 54. The two sportsbooks were able to take advantage of both the excitement of the re-opened sportsbooks and the Super Bowl.

New sports betting kiosks were made available for the sportsbooks. The kiosks can only take bets up to $1,000, but the casino owners are satisfied with the results.

“It cuts down the lines at the window,” said Brian Knost, the marketing manager of Mardi Gras Casino. Guests can go up to the kiosks and they can place their bets there and get a voucher. Should they win on that particular bet then they can take it to the cage and cash in on that bet.”

Although both sportsbooks had mobile wagering when they shut down, neither sportsbook is offering mobile sports betting yet. But that does not mean that they never will.

The online and mobile sports betting app Betly will be available “very soon.”

Last year, both of these casinos completely missed out on March Madness due to the sportsbook shutting down. Now that both are open, they will get their chance to fully take advantage of March Madness betting.

Many teams have failed from the top spot of the college basketball rankings. With that, sportsbooks have been offering enticing odds on college basketball futures. Less than half a dozen teams have odds less than +1000 to win it all and many top-10 teams have odds below +1800.

Perhaps the unknown result of March Madness will be all of the push West Virginia needs to have sports bettors begin taking advantage of their industry.
