TAMPA, Fla. – Super Bowl LV will be historic in many ways. Not only are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the first team to host a Super Bowl in their stadium, but a woman will be a referee in the big game for the first time in NFL history.

Sarah Thomas also made NFL history before, becoming the first full-time female official in 2015. Now, Thomas will make history again, as she officiates the fifth playoff game of her career and her first Super Bowl as she will be the Down Judge in Super Bowl LV.
“Sarah Thomas has made history again as the first female Super Bowl official,” said Troy Vincent, NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations. “Her elite performance and commitment to excellence has earned her the right to officiate the Super Bowl. Congratulations to Sarah on this well-deserved honor.”
There will also be two other firsts for women as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chiefs coaching staffs feature females in prominent roles on their staff this season
There will be more women in on-field roles during Super Bowl LV than ever before:

BetOnline has posted four Super Bowl betting props centered around this first female referee in Super Bowl history. These props range from how Thomas will wear her hair during the game to will she get knocked down by a player.
How Will Sarah Thomas Wear Her Hair
- Down (Ponytail) -300
- Up (In Hat) +200
Winner: Up (+200). Super Bowl bettors should take the +200 odds that Sarah Thomas wears her hair Up in her hat during the game. Since it will be the late evening when the Super Bowl kicks off, the on-field temperature could cause Thomas to put her hair up in her hat. To add to this, she also had her hair up when she officiated the first NFL Playoff game of her career.

Roll the dice on her having hair inside of her hat as opposed to wearing it down.
Sarah Thomas 1st Mention During Broadcast
- First Half -300
- Second Half +200
Winner: First Half (-300). The history that will be made by Sarah Thomas being the first woman to officiate a Super Bowl will likely be brought up in the first half. The NFL needs the positive PR in the wake of the Chad Wheeler incident and expect Thomas to be honored in the first half, likely before the coin toss.
Sarah Thomas To Get Knocked To The Ground By A Player
- No -2000
- Yes +700
Winner: Yes (+700). NFL officials have to put themselves in the middle of the action to get the best possible angles to make correct calls in the game. Sarah Thomas is no stranger to this as she’s suffered a broken wrist in a Week 16 game in 2016. While Super Bowl bettors should not wager the house on this prop, the +700 odds for this are well worth the risk as the potential return on this prop is intriguing.
Will Any Player Slap Sarah Thomas On The Butt
- No -10000
- Yes +1600
Winner: No (-10000). This prop is very unlikely to happen as no player would risk being heavily fined or potentially being suspended for making illegal contact with Thomas. NFL players, including Aaron Rodgers have been seen in the past slapping referees on the butt after successful plays. But, those refs were males and the stakes are too high in the Super Bowl to risk any sort of penalty.
The kickoff for Super Bowl LV is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. EST and will be broadcasted by CBS.
