Texas Game Script May Have Stafford Passing Prop Set Too High

LOS ANGELES – Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams are 16-point favorites over the Houston Texans in Week 8.

Along with the game lines, legal online betting sites have given Matthew Stafford player prop odds on his total passing yards.

What Stafford Has Done

This season, Matthew Stafford has hit the Over on his NFL player props in four of seven games. However, three of the four teams that he has hit the Over against have been bottom-ranked teams against opposing quarterbacks.

Those teams include the Seattle Seahawks (6th against pass), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (11th against pass), and Detroit Lions (12th against pass).

In games where Stafford has gone up against a defense allowing less than 250 yards per game such as the New York Giants, Arizona Cardinals, and Indianapolis Colts, he has been held to less than 280 yards. This is important being that the Texans have allowed opposing quarterbacks to throw for 246.3 yards per game.

Aside from the stats that Stafford has put up, he has also seen a concerning trend in regards to his passing yard totals in each game.

Each week that Stafford has hit the Over on his passing yard total, he follows it up by hitting the Under in the next week. With Stafford hitting the Over in his last game against the Detroit Lions, it could be cause for concern with his Over this week.

What The Texans Have Done

The Texans passing defense is not terrible as they have allowed just 246.3 yards per game to quarterbacks. They have held some notable names under 297.5 yards including Kyler Murray, Carson Wentz, Mac Jones, Josh Allen, and Baker Mayfield.

The only two quarterbacks to hit the Over were Sam Darnold (304 yards) and Trevor Lawrence (332 yards).

The fact that the Texans have held multiple elite quarterbacks to Under 297.5 is impressive nonetheless, however, in those games, they lost by multiple possessions which caused the teams to shift to a run-first offense.

Also, the Texans run defense is the second-worst in the league allowing opposing teams to total 145.7 rush yards per game this season.

With the Rams being favored by a league-leading 16 points, online sportsbooks are expecting them to run away with the score which could shift them to attack the ground game. This game script may cause Stafford to throw the ball less thus hitting the Under.
