TAMPA BAY, Fla. – Only four NFL teams failed to cover the spread at a 40% or higher rate last season. Knowing which teams are poor spread bets is critical to betting success for the NFL season kicking off on September 7.

Perhaps the only thing better than knowing the best teams against the spread are the worst ones. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers take that title for the 2022-2023 NFL season, posting an abysmal 4-13-1 record against the spread despite an NFL Playoffs appearance.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-13-1 ATS, 8-10 SU)

Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers managed to sneak into the NFL Playoffs despite a 23.5% cover rate. They’re the first team to finish the season with a cover rate below 25% since the 2016 Cleveland Browns, who won a single game that year.

Remarkably, Tampa Bay won eight games straight up but struggled to cover a spread. The Buccaneers failed to cover in seven of their last eight games.

Tampa is listed at legal online sportsbooks as a 6.5-point underdog to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1 of the 2023-2024 NFL season.

Chicago Bears (5-11-1 ATS, 3-14 SU)

The Chicago Bears finished the 2022-2023 NFL season with a 3-14 record, the worst in the NFL. Chicago still managed to cover more games against the spread than Tampa Bay despite being an underdog in all but two games.

The Chicago Bears open the 2023-2024 NFL season as 4.5-point favorites on legal NFL betting sites against the Green Bay Packers. Chicago was 0-1-1 against the spread as a favorite last season, giving value to a Packers squad without Aaron Rodgers.

Indianapolis Colts (6-11 ATS, 4-12 SU)

The Indianapolis Colts covered the spread at a 35.3% rate last season, the third-worst in the NFL. Indianapolis tied Chicago for the lowest margin of victory at -8.1 points per game.

The Colts suffered embarrassing spread-losses of 0-24 as a 3.0-point favorite to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and 19-54 as an 11-point underdog to the Dallas Cowboys.

Seattle Seahawks (7-11 ATS, 9-9 SU)

The Seattle Seahawks were one of the biggest surprises in terms of straight up record (9-9) last season, but posted a rough 7-11 record against the spread. Seattle failed to cover a legal sports betting in their last four games as a favorite but covered five of their first seven games as an underdog.

The Seahawks were a difficult team to gauge in the 2022-2023, but bettors would’ve made profit betting against Seattle, as well as the other three teams last season.
