LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The 146th running of Kentucky Derby and Oaks will now be open with limited spectators under strict protocols and restrictions.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and local health officials have given Churchill Downs the OK to allow fans into the infield for Louisville’s biggest annual party.
“Churchill Downs submitted a comprehensive plan to the state government that ensures that the Kentucky Derby will look very different this year, (but the changes) will help to protect the health and safety of every Kentuckian, which is my main priority.” said Beshear.
The crowd size will be smaller allowing up to 24,268 people in the stands. There will be mask-wearing and social distancing requirements throughout the property.
The races that were initially to run on May 1-2 were postponed to September 4-5 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Currently, many horse races are operating without fans in the stands and many legal sports bettors are ready to be able to watch the races in person.
