Tiz The Law Favorite For Kentucky Derby After Belmont Success

• Tiz The Law (+150) has the shortest odds to win the 2020 Kentucky Derby.
• Just behind the Belmont winner are Honor A P, and Authentic with odds of +500 and +800, respectively.
• As the only Triple Crown contender, Tiz The Law has +300 odds to win all three races in 2020.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In what was a completely expected by-the-books Belmont Stakes, the focus of horse bettors turns to the Triple Crown.

With the Belmont being the first race of the Triple Crown, horse bettors have a major race to peak-back on before betting on the Kentucky Derby.

Set to begin on September 5, the Kentucky Derby favors Tiz The Law (+150) yet again.

What Happened In The Belmont?

After a $34 million handle on the Belmont, horse bettors rang up a total of just under $68 million horse racing bets across the entire card of races.

While the race was well off of the Belmont’s record high betting handle ($151.1 million in 2014), a fan-less venue still accounted for a fall in action.

At $102.16 million a year ago, the Belmont dropped a third of its handle without any spectators to build the environment.

That didn’t stop bettors from getting their money’s worth. As a heavy favorite, Tiz The Law won the race by four lengths to Dr Post, after seeing his line move from +125 to -135 on race day.

It was a first for both the jockey, Manuel Franco (who won his first Triple Crown race) and the horse, as Tiz The Law became the first New York-bred horse in over 100 years to win the Belmont.

Tiz The Law’s Triple Crown Odds

As the winner of the Belmont, Tiz The Law will also become the first-ever Triple Crown contender racing in the Kentucky Derby.

With an unsettled list of horses running in the 146th Kentucky Derby, the field is open more than ever.

Looking at the Belmont Stakes results, runner up Dr Post (+1200 odds), third-place Max Player (+1600), and fourth-place Pneumatic (+5000) all offer a great incentive.

Still, Tiz The Law is the sizeable favorite.

Unlike the Belmont though, the Kentucky Derby holds the possibility of having fans in the stands.

Even at a “social-distanced” level, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear is exploring the possibility of allowing non-essential personnel at the Kentucky Derby, as Churchill Downs filed a Kentucky Derby operations plan for Beshear’s approval.

Whether this occurs or not will hold no value over Tiz The Law’s Triple Crown odds. However, a running that honors the horse in the middle leg of the Triple Crown, may bring incentive to the October 3 Preakness in supporting fans in the stands.

While the odds have heavily shifted shorter for a Triple Crown winner, Tiz The Law was able to win the Belmont with the help of some notable injuries occurring to horses beforehand.

Honor AP (+500) and Authentic (+800) were both in the same wheelhouse of odds as Tiz The Law to win the Belmont before pulling out. Likewise, an injury to Maxfield boosted the horse’s chances to win even higher.

As the +300 odds still are worthwhile to take, don’t expect Tiz The Law to cruise to victory as easily as he did in the Belmont Stakes.

Despite a horse racing fan’s desire to take the Triple Crown favorite or a dark horse on the Kentucky Derby, legal sportsbooks are already ready for the action.
