Tony Romo The Betting Favorite in Celebrity Golf Tournament

STATELINE, Nev. – Some of the biggest names in the world of sports return to athletic competition for the first time in months this weekend. Unfortunately, they will not be playing the games they call their own, trading in their jerseys and helmets for drivers and golf towels at the American Century Championship.

The annual celebrity golf tournament is all set to get started Friday, with a field featuring 71 pro-athletes, former athletes, sports media members, and famous personalities.

While it won’t be as competitive as betting on the PGA Tour, odds are available for the event, with two-time defending champion Tony Romo as the favorite.

Two-Man Race

While Romo is the recent dominating champion of this competition, he doesn’t yet have has many wins as the man behind him on the betting board.

Former pitcher Mark Mulder won this event three times in a row from 2015 to 2017, a feat that Romo will look to match with a win this weekend.

With both Mulder and Romo getting close to even odds, the oddsmakers aren’t putting much faith in the rest of the field to crown a new champion.

Smoltz Coming In Hot

The most hyped competitor entering the tournament has to be Braves legend, John Smoltz. Smoltz opened with massive legal betting odds to win the tournament at +3000 in some books.

Not much belief in a man who played for the US Senior Open and PGA Tour Champions Circuit, where he made four cuts in his five events.

“They made a big mistake on my odds,” said Smoltz. “I don’t know who set the odds, but I opened at 30/1 — and I couldn’t get to the place fast enough to put some money down on me.”

At +800, Smoltz still has good value in the field to show these amateurs how it’s done.
