MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – With sports betting legalization running smoothly in the United States, when will the Google Play Store allow for sports betting apps to be uploaded for Android users?

In the few short years that sports betting became legal, changes around the country can be seen.

There are multiple teams that are now partnered with sportsbooks across the country. On top of that, major sports channels like ESPN has started airing sports betting programs across the board. Legal sports betting is becoming more mainstream, but there are still some holdbacks.

One main thing that could be holding back sports betting is Google and the Google Play Store.

For android users, the main way to get apps is through the Google Play Store. Unfortunately, Google’s terms and services does not allow for real money gambling apps in the United States.

Although countries like the United Kingdom and France can have sports betting apps, the United States cannot yet. This is most likely due to the fact that each state has its own individual laws when it comes to gambling.

Federally, sports betting is not against the law, but it is not legalized. That means that it is up to each individual state to decide to legalize sports betting or not. Google needs to comply with each state law when it comes to allowing apps for distribution.

Although some states can use sports betting apps through FanDuel and DraftKings through other distributors, they cannot get these apps on the Google Play Store. It is most likely that all states in the United States would need to allow for sports betting and gambling before this change.
