- The total sports betting handle was $76.9 million.
- $59.247 million came from mobile and online sports betting.
CHARLESTON, W.V. β West Virginia saw a major boom in sports betting activity in September. The month on month numbers shows major activity.
This can be attributed to the increase in sporting events to wager on, as the NFL season had just begun and the NBA and MLB playoffs were in full swing alongside the NHL Finals.
The boom in sports betting is good signs for the West Virginia betting market which suffered earlier in the year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
September Sports Betting
The West Virginia sports betting market has been booming in the recent months, seeing massive month on month growth.
September saw the biggest jump all year, with the official revenue report showing a 90.3% increase in betting handle from August.
West Virginia saw $76.9 million in wagers, with $59.247 million coming from online and mobile betting. In August the total betting handle was $40.4 million.
In addition to betting handle being higher, the revenue numbers also saw a major spike. WV saw a 133% increase in betting revenue in September, $4.60 million compared to the $1.97 million in August.
This is a major boom in sports betting activity and revenue and it can be attributed not only to the sporting events but also to the launch of the William Hill sportsbook in West Virginia.
As more than half of all betting activity came online in September, it makes perfect sense that the September launch of the William Hill Sportsbook through the Mountaineer Casino & Racetrack contributed greatly to the total numbers.
Sports betting in the Mountain State is expected to continue to show growth headed into October as the numbers for the NBA Finals, MLB World Series, and the continued NFL season will be accounted for.
The few weeks that the NFL was active in September helped contribute to the over 90% increase in betting handle and revenue. Now with a full month of action, those numbers should boom even further.
The legal sports betting market in West Virginia has continued to show the major success that it was hoping for on launch.
